The ins and outs of my grading process

Turning in Homework

All homework projects are due within the first 15 minutes after the beginning of the class unless otherwise specified. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED except in extreme circumstances. Because late work will not be accepted after the first 15 minutes of class, you may submit one assignment at the end of the quarter for full credit. If you will be late or absent, make arrangements to have the work submitted.

Criteria / Rubric

The questions I ask when grading …

  1. Did the student meet or exceed the project goals?
  2. Did the student work to apply and experiment with new techniques and concepts?
  3. Does the student apply proper design and programming techniques?

… lead to answers and your grades.

  • A = The student has EXCEEDED the expectations of ALL criteria.
  • B = The student has met ALL objectives competently.
  • C = The student has met the requirements within their simplest definition.
  • D = The student has not met the all requirements but has adequately met some.
  • F = The student has not fulfilled requirements or has done so very poorly.

So what’s worth what?

I use a flexible grading system as the pace of each class changes with the students who are enrolled. This means that at times I will add exercises, quizzes, or projects, while other times I remove some depending on how well students take to certain topics. Regardless of the number of assignments, each type has a weight that it always maintains.

Breakdown

  • Exercises count 1 time
  • Quizzes count 1 time
  • Projects count 2 times
  • Mid-quarters count 4 times
  • Finals count 4 times
  • 3rd, 6th, and 9th Quarter Reviews are worth half the overall course grade

Examples

  • 1 Project = 2 Exercises / Quizzes
  • 1 Mid-quarter / Final = 2 Projects
  • 1 Mid-quarter / Final = 4 Exercises / Quizzes

Grading Scale / Attendance Deductions

  • A = 100 to 92
  • A- = 91.9 to 90
  • B+ = 89.9 to 88
  • B  = 87.9 to 82
  • B- = 81.9 to 80
  • C+ = 79.9 to 78
  • C  = 77.9 to 72
  • C- = 71.9 to 70
  • D+ = 69.9 to 67
  • D  = 66.9 to 60
  • F  = 59.9 and below
  • A = Starting grade
  • A = No Penalty 0–4hrs
  • B = 4-6hrs
  • C = 6-8hrs
  • D = 8-10hrs
  • F = 10+hrs
