GAD324 - 3D Modeling / Animation

Students will create proposals for projects that apply advanced modeling and animation techniques
learned in previous modeling and animation courses to produce a variety of high quality 3D objects,
environments, vehicles, characters and props.

WK During Class Homework Due

Project 1 - Premise

01
  Go over syllabus
  Online space / exchange contacts
  3D Image as art

Games vs. Art: Ebert vs. Barker
Project 1- PowerPoint containing th following
- Premise
- Art Center
- Storyboards (10-20sec)
- Show and talk about ideas color palette(s)
- Be ready to talk the emotional tone of the piece
- Production schedule
Think about keeping your concept simple, and realistic for this timeframe. You can always add onto this at a later time. Also, think like a smart artist, and try not to fall into the overstressed / overworked student who is rushing to finished their overbearing idea until the last minute.

Project 2 - Environment

03
Weeklies (Show & Tell)
Lab
Reference art should have been made, and your environment needs to be blocked out with primitives. Some modeling progress should be made already.

04
Weeklies (Show & Tell)
Lab
At this point your should have your environment modeled and textured, and you should start thinking about lighting.

Project 3 - Vehicle

06
Weeklies (Show & Tell)
Lab
Reference art should have been made, and your vehicle needs to be modeled. Texture and rigging work should be made. Once this is done, block out your vehicle's animation.

Project 4 - Character or Animated Prop(s)
Final - Art Packet
- Create a 30 sec to 2 min rough animatic of your final video with soundtrack and appropriate timing. Be sure to include breakdown shots of your major elements. (see reference to the left)
- Final PowerPoint with the following elements: 1) a walk through of your process since the beginning of the quarter, 2) final renders and any adjustments of elements from the previous projects, 3) how you were able to capture your initial premise / concept in your final renders, and 4) a brief reflection / postmortem.
- Polished final video based off of your animatic.

Project 4 - Character or Animated Prop(s)

08
Weeklies (Show & Tell)
Lab

Turn in the 30 sec to 2 min rough animatic of your final video with soundtrack and appropriate timing. Be sure to include breakdown shots of your major elements.

Model sheets need to have been made already, and the basic form should have been roughed out. Start working on final shape, topology, and texture.

09
Weeklies (Show & Tell)
Lab
Your model should be almost done now. Your rigging should start now, and tweaks to textures should be made. Once that is done, block out the animation for this model. Put everything in the scene and start making some tweaks for the final camera movements. Think about any lighting changes you want to make as well.

  Project 4 - Character or Animated Prop(s)

Final changes to lights and cameras need to be made now, as rendering time will be rather long. Think about ways to use mulitple computers to render different frames at the same time.
